falling at last hurdle with math-server

I've been trying to fire up the math-server capability in emacspeak.
I've got through the installation of node, nvm and the dependencies.
which node returns
home/unimelb.edu.au/prayner/.nvm/versions/node/v10.7.0/bin/node
In the buffer where I start the server I get:
$ node math-server.js
Math server running at port 5000
which sounds like good news.
In the client buffer I get:
nc localhost 5000
(welcome  "Maths Speech  Server! ")
which also sounds like good news.
Then
\frac{a+b}{c+d}
yields silence
while in the server buffer I get:
Handler for \ not defined.
Makes me think I've skipped a step somewhere in the installation of
dependencies or some such.
Anyone have any pointers how to debug?
thanks in advance
Peter
