Let me guess - X11 version of emacs with font-locking/
highlighting or whatever in non-X mode like emacs -nw
with or without xterm or console VT or somesuch?
If yes, this doesn't work _and_ produces a stringp nil.
Get rid of font-lock or recompile a console-only non-X11
version or run under X Windows without the dash nw.
