filtering columns function modification

Yes, I did think  of the problem of how to silence to the
end of the line,
reason I didn't build it is the hurdle you hit,
namely the end of the line is going to be different for each
line.
I didn't want to do the 100000 hack --it's an ugliness that
will come back to haunt.
