Doug,
I think you may be misunderstanding some of the processes involved in
setting up midi.
Please have a look at the postings in the archive about setting up
midi. This topic has been discused and explained in the past. Try
going to the emacspeak search page and do a search on midi and
studiosynth.
If you go to http://www.cs.vassar.edu/search.html and set the "index
to search" to "emacspeak" you should be able to search for and find
helpfull postings.
Once you have had a look there, please come to the list and ask
questions.
