It should also be noted that the commercial sound drivers from
www.opensound.com support software mixing of audio channels. Previous
versions created several audio devices (/dev/audio1 /dev/audio2 /dev/audio3
etc) which could be used at the same time. This, however, forced the user
to modify their apps to use a specific audio device. The newest versions of
OSS dynamically allocate the next free virtual sound device when a program
tries to access /dev/audio or /dev/dsp. The end result is that multiple
sound applications can play sound at once. Note that this info comes from
reading OpenSound's web page; I haven't upgraded to the latest version to
test this feature.
