1. The change you refer to was part of a larger cleanup to leverage
   features of updates to org-mode, while making the Emacspeak code
   itself more consistent, ie eliminating special casing between org and outline.
2. It may well have changed behavior, but your comment re region is
   misleding, since "region" means something specific.
3. I suggest you experiment and come up with a patch that improves the
   behavior based on the new code.
4. SHA checksum tip: only include the first 6 digits rather than the
   entire  SHA string.
