Company mode and auditory icons

https://emacspeak.blogspot.com/2014/05/emacspeak-and-company-complete-anything.html says that there should be an auditory icon when Company Mode first presents me we with a list of possible completions. On the other hand, I do hear an icon when a choice is made.

I even tried adding the code below, but am still not hearing any icons -- are perhaps icons quieted when the function is called from a timer?
