Linux Lab

  • Tools for pdf editing and on screen annotation
    • pdfedit Free (and open source) editor for manipulating PDF documents. GUI version + commandline interface. Scripting is used to a great extent in editor and almost anything can be scripted, it is possible to create own scripts or plugins.1) Pdfedit User Docs.
    • Xournal Home on sourceforge “Xournal is an application for notetaking, sketching, keeping a journal using a stylus.”  It also can import and export PDF and has some basic shape recognition.
    • gromit Gromit (GRaphics Over MIscellaneous Things) is a small tool to make annotations on the screen.”
    • dia Dia - a GTK+ based diagram creation program
  • DrJava stable 2008/08/28 release  We upgraded from the January release to the Aug. release.  The new release is what you get if you type drjava at a command prompt or if you use the menues.  If you want to run the previous version, issue the command drjava –prev or drjava -p at the command prompt.
  • Netbeans 6.1 We upgraded from version 5.5.1  Netbeans 6.1 is what you get if you select netbeans from the menus or type netbeans at a command prompt.  If you still want to run version 5.5.1 drop me a note and I’ll tell you how to get it.
  • jdk 1.6.0_07 This is the current stable release of java 1.6.  While this version is not the system default it is available for use. you can set it for yourself or select it in your application.  It lives in /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_07/ 
  • PLT 4.1 Old version 3.x has been removed, version 4.0.1 is still on the system in /usr/local/share/plt-4.0.1DrScheme is part of PLT.  Both the commands drscheme and drscheme4 will launch the current version of DrScheme.
  • Allegro CL version 8.1  Version 7.x is still on the system but no is longer being patched or updated.  Version 8.1 is what you now get with the command aclemacs and is what is linked to /usr/local/alc
  • Dr Scheme version 4.0.1  Version 3.x is still what you get if you type drscheme or if you select Dr. Scheme from a menu.  If you want to try out this recently released version you will need to type drscheme4 from a command line.
  • vym View Your Mind mind mapping software.
  • avr RISC microcontroler tools Tools for creating programs for AVR microcontrolers have been installed including avr-gcc the gcc cross compiler for avr, avrdude for talking to the programmer and various libraries and utilities.  We also have the avrusb500smd programmer for Amtel AVR from tuxgraphics.

Windows Lab

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 9 All lab Windows machines have had Visual Studio upgraded along with all documentation and associated libraries.
